GrantTree’s innovation grants team helped nine cutting-edge UK businesses acquire nearly £3 million from the April 2022 round of Innovate UK’s hotly-contested Smart programme.
A £25 million initiative offering SMEs up to £1.4 million in grant funding, Smart is designed to catapult early-stage R&D projects towards commercialisation.

How competitive are Smart Grants?
Unlike most competitions, Smart is industry-agnostic, meaning businesses from any sector can apply.
Smart’s accessibility is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it makes grant funding available to companies that aren’t eligible for Innovate UK’s more specialist initiatives. On the other, it makes Smart fiercely competitive, with only 4-7% of applicants receiving funding.
Now that Innovate UK has overhauled Smart’s application process, the success rate is likely to fall even lower.
Despite these challenges, GrantTree’s consultants helped nine clients secure sizeable grants that will propel their development work towards commercialisation.
