Podcast Episode 45: Gravity-Powered Batteries

On episode 45 of GrantTree’s innovation podcast, What Comes Next?…

Everyone knows that if we want to address the climate emergency, we need to transition to 100% renewable energy.

What we’re less sure about is how we can store renewable energy so that it’s available to us when we need it, not just when the wind is blowing or sun is shining.

A number of storage systems are already in development, like large lithium batteries and canisters of compressed air.

But none are as elegant as Gravitricity’s “solid weight storage solution” that converts excess electricity into gravitational potential energy by hoisting heavy, tanker-sized weights up abandoned mine shafts.

Gravitricity’s managing director Charlie Blair joins us to talk more about the company’s technology and its ambitious plans for the future.
