Grant Competition: Energy Catalyst Round 9

Secure more than £2 million in grant funding for your clean energy project through the Energy Catalyst Round 9 competition.

If you are working on an R&D project that could increase energy access in Official Development Assistance (ODA) countries, you may qualify for Round 9 of the Energy Catalyst programme.

The competition is open to innovations in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia or the Indo-Pacific regions. Its goal is to accelerate the clean energy transition in these areas and end energy poverty.

Eligible projects must start by 1st April 2023 and end by 31st March 2026, with total costs of between £50,000 and £5 million depending on the stage of your project.

You have until 11 am UK time on 10th August 2022 to apply to one of three strands:

Am I eligible for the Energy Catalyst Round 9?

Your project

Your project must:

  • Have total costs between:
    • £50,000 and £300,000 (Early Stage)
    • £50,000 and £1.5 million (Mid Stage)
    • £50,000 and £5 million (Late Stage)
  • Start by 1 April 2023 and end by 31 March 2026, lasting between:
    • 3 and 12 months (Early Stage)
    • 6 and 24 months (Mid Stage)
    • 6 and 36 months (Late Stage)
  • Include a UK-registered administrative lead
  • Involve at least one SME from anywhere in the world

Leading a project

All eligible organisations can lead or collaborate on any number of applications.

Energy Catalyst has two types of lead: an administrative lead and a technical lead.

As the administrative lead, you:

  • Must be registered in the UK
  • Must claim grant funding through the Energy Catalyst

As the technical lead, you:

  • Can be from anywhere in the world
  • Must claim grant funding through the Energy Catalyst
  • Can be an SME, research technology organisation (RTO) or academic institution (Early Stage)
  • Or a business of any size (Mid and Late Stages)

Partnering with a lead

To collaborate with the lead, your organisation must be any of the following:

  • Business of any size
  • Academic institution
  • Charity
  • Not for profit
  • Non-governmental organisation
  • Research and technology organisation

Subcontractors

Energy Catalyst allows subcontractors from anywhere in the world, so long as all subcontractor costs are justified and appropriate to the total costs.

How do I apply for the Energy Catalyst Round 9?

You have until 11 am on 10th August 2022 to submit your application via the competition website. Successful applicants will then be notified in October.

You must apply directly to either the Early, Mid or Late stage competition strands. If you are unsure which strand your project is eligible for, please speak to our grant experts.
