PPSGB R&D Tax Relief Case Study

International PPE and safety equipment manufacturer PPS Global Protection approached GrantTree to prepare its first-ever R&D Tax Credits claim. In the three years since we have helped the company secure over £160,000 from the scheme while keeping its team’s involvement to the bare minimum.

PPSGB's Story

PPSGB manufactures more than 2,000 safety and personal protection products, including air-fed suits, incident shelters and patient isolation capsules. The company has been in business for more than 75 years, during which time it has evolved into an international brand trusted by organisations and public bodies all over the world. PPSGB also played a significant role during the COVID-19 pandemic, protecting NHS staff by insulating medical devices, developing new equipment to limit the spread of infection, and deploying shelters to serve as vaccination centres.

Insulating Innovation

PPSGB is constantly innovating. As one of the world’s leaders in protective equipment, companies, healthcare providers and even entire national governments look to PPSGB to keep their people safe from a plethora of dangers and hazards. The company’s belief in continual improvement, and in leveraging the latest technologies to enhance its products, drives a steady stream of research and development work that is well suited to the R&D Tax Credits scheme.

First Time Claimants

Despite its illustrious history of innovation, PPSGB had never filed for R&D Tax Credits. Like many companies, it found the scheme difficult to understand and didn’t want to risk trouble with HMRC by filing an inaccurate claim. The company was also unclear about which of its development costs would be eligible for relief under the scheme, meaning it was unsure how large a financial benefit it would receive from filing.

GrantTree's Approach

Soon after PPSGB brought GrantTree onboard, our R&D technical consultants scheduled a site visit to the company’s production centre in Milton Keynes.

Our team conducted face-to-face interviews with PPSGB’S technical personnel and observed its development and manufacturing processes first-hand. As a result, GrantTree’s technical consultants were able to identify a range of costs like wastage and material reworking that PPSGB didn’t realise were eligible for relief.

Meanwhile, our finance specialists worked closely with PPSGB’s accountants to collect the necessary financial data. This saved PPSGB time and ensured we could file their R&D Tax Credits claim soon after it submitted their annual accounts to HMRC. This enabled PPSGB to access and reinvest its relief quickly.
